Who translates and certifies a passport?

These so-called authorized translators are state-certified, sworn in before an internal affairs authority, a regional court, or a higher regional court, and thus authorized to translate documents into other languages with certification.

How do I determine the page count?

A single page is one side of a sheet of paper (regardless of word count). Front and back count as two separate pages. For translation purposes, we count all relevant pages of your original document. The total page count is the sum of all individual pages. Learn more here.

  • Yes, at least most of the time

The question is legitimate. A passport is a document specifically designed to be internationally valid and recognized. Just like an identity card and driver's license, it's an official photo ID. Unlike a (German) identity card, it also allows you to travel outside the EU. So why should you have to translate it? In short: There are countries where your native language or the official languages listed in your passport are rarely spoken. However, in certain situations, you may still need to show your identification documents. This could be the case, for example, if you plan to stay abroad for an extended period of time or if you have to appear before the police (e.g., as a witness to a theft).

If a certified translation of your passport is required, you will usually be asked to provide one. To be on the safe side, we always recommend asking the recipient whether a certified translation of your ID card is necessary.

  • Feeling at home somewhere else – translation for stays abroad

You don't just need your passport to travel the world. It's also important if your trip takes you to a new country for an extended period of time. Depending on how long and where you plan to settle, you'll likely need to provide identification sooner or later. In many countries, this should be sufficient with your passport. However, in some countries, the language of your ID may not be understood; in this case, you'll need a recognized translation. You can order such a certified translation quickly and easily online from us. Then you can begin your stay abroad without worry.

  • When the police knock – Translation for foreign authorities

Even outside your home country, you may witness a crime or come into contact with the police in another way. You may be required to give a statement or assist in the investigation. Either way, you will need to show identification. And if your original identification documents aren't understood or accepted, a certified translation is usually the only solution. You can obtain this from a professional translation service provider like us. Our sworn translators will create a certified translation of your passport, which is also recognized by the foreign police. This also applies to other foreign offices and authorities.
