What the Ukrainian high school diploma includes
The Ukrainian high school diploma is called Атестат про повну загальну середню освіту (Certificate of Complete General Secondary Education). Unlike single-page certificates from some countries, this is a multi-page booklet with security features, official stamps, and your personal data. German authorities expect a complete translation of all components.
Components of your Ukrainian diploma
- Main diploma booklet Атестат про повну загальну середню освіту, containing your name, date of birth, school name, and graduation details
- Grade annex Додаток до атестата, listing all subjects and final grades. This must be translated alongside the main diploma.
- Security elements Holographic features, official stamps, and signatures that authenticate the document
- Format variations Post-2018 diplomas have updated layouts, but we handle all versions including older formats
Document variations we handle
Ukrainian educational documents come in different formats depending on when and where they were issued. Our sworn translators are experienced with all variations.
- ✓ Complete booklet-style diplomas with all original pages
- ✓ Handwritten grade entries common in older diplomas
- ✓ Worn or partially damaged documents where text remains legible
- ✓ Name transliteration from Cyrillic to Latin alphabets
- ✓ Detached or separately issued grade supplements
Common mistakes to avoid
We see these errors regularly, and they cause delays or rejections at German authorities.
- Translating only the diploma The grade annex (Додаток) is required by universities. Without it, your application is incomplete.
- Missing pages Every page of the booklet must be submitted and translated, including inside covers with stamps.
- No Apostille German authorities often require an Apostille for Ukrainian educational documents. See below.
- Non-sworn translation Only translations by court-appointed sworn translators are recognized by German authorities.
Apostille requirements for Ukrainian diplomas
This section is critical. Many Ukrainian students discover too late that their diploma needs an Apostille before German authorities will accept it. Understanding this requirement early saves weeks of stress.
What is an Apostille?
An Apostille is an international certification that proves your document is authentic. For Ukrainian educational documents, this certification must come from the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science. Germany and Ukraine are both members of the Hague Apostille Convention, which means an Apostille from Ukraine is recognized in Germany without additional authentication.
The correct order of steps
- Step 1: Obtain Apostille in Ukraine Apply through the Ministry of Education or authorized service centers. This can take 5-10 business days.
- Step 2: Then get the translation The Apostille itself must be translated along with your diploma. This is why you need it first.
- Step 3: Submit to German authority Your package includes: original diploma with Apostille, certified translation of both.
If you submit a translation without the Apostille, German authorities may reject your documents or require you to return later with proper authentication. Plan accordingly, especially if you are working with university enrollment deadlines.
When is an Apostille required?
Not every situation requires an Apostille, but most official processes do. Universities almost always require it for admission. The "Ausländerbehörde" (Immigration Office) typically requires it for residence permits linked to education. The "Einbürgerungsbehörde" (Naturalization Office) may require it for citizenship applications. When in doubt, contact the specific authority to confirm their requirements before you begin.

Calculate your priceWhen you need your Ukrainian diploma translated
Your high school diploma unlocks doors across German bureaucracy. Each situation has specific requirements and emotional stakes. Here are the most common scenarios.
University admission (Hochschulzugang)
The Einschreibungsfrist (enrollment deadline) is approaching. Other applicants have already submitted their documents. You need your Ukrainian diploma translated, certified, and delivered before the admissions office closes your file.
German universities require a certified translation of both your diploma and grade annex (Додаток до атестата). Most also require an Apostille. Some universities additionally require a Zeugnis-Bewertung (credential evaluation) from anabin or uni-assist to determine how your Ukrainian qualification compares to German standards. The translation is always required. The evaluation depends on the university and program.
Picture the moment: you log into the university portal, upload your certified translation, and see your application status change to "documents complete." The admissions officer has everything needed to process your application.
Vocational training application (Ausbildung)
Ausbildungsbetriebe (training companies) and Berufsschulen (vocational schools) need proof that you have completed secondary education. Your Ukrainian diploma is that proof, but only when properly translated.
The pressure here is competition. German applicants hand over their Abitur or Realschulabschluss without any extra steps. You need your Ukrainian equivalent to look equally professional and official. A clean, certified translation with proper formatting makes your application competitive.
The employer opens your application folder, sees the certified translation with official stamp and signature, and knows immediately that your qualifications are legitimate and verified.
Residence permit at the "Ausländerbehörde"
The "Ausländerbehörde" (Immigration Office) processes residence permits for students and skilled workers. If your permit is tied to education or employment, they need to verify your qualifications. Your Ukrainian diploma is part of this verification.
Appointments at the "Ausländerbehörde" are notoriously difficult to schedule. Showing up with incomplete documents means rebooking, waiting weeks for a new appointment, and extending uncertainty about your legal status in Germany.
With properly translated and apostilled documents, you hand over your file and watch the clerk process your application. Complete. Accepted. No second appointment needed.
Citizenship at the "Einbürgerungsbehörde"
Applying for German citizenship requires extensive documentation of your life history, including your education. The "Einbürgerungsbehörde" (Naturalization Office) needs to understand your background, and your high school diploma is part of that picture.
Citizenship applications can take months to process. A missing or improperly certified translation can reset the clock, adding more months to an already lengthy wait. Getting the translation right the first time keeps your application moving forward.

Frequently asked questions
The diploma and grade annex should be translated together as one order. German universities specifically require the grade annex to evaluate your qualifications. Submitting only the diploma without grades will result in an incomplete application.
The translation does not determine equivalency. That decision is made by the university or through a credential evaluation service like anabin or uni-assist. The certified translation enables authorities to assess your qualifications, but the formal recognition depends on their evaluation criteria. Many Ukrainian diplomas qualify for direct university admission, but some programs may require additional courses (Studienkolleg).
Handwritten grades and annotations are common in older Ukrainian diplomas. Our translators are experienced with these variations and will accurately transcribe and translate all handwritten content. Ensure your scan or photograph is clear enough to read the handwriting.
Ukrainian names in Cyrillic script are transliterated to Latin characters according to standard conventions. If your name appears differently in other documents (passport, for example), let us know and we can add a note to ensure consistency across your paperwork.
Yes. Express 24-hour service is available Monday through Friday. Select this option at checkout if you need your translation urgently. Keep in mind that the Apostille (if required) must be obtained separately in Ukraine before we can translate it.
For the translation, a clear scan or photograph is sufficient. We work from digital copies. However, German authorities typically require the printed original translation alongside your original diploma when you submit your application. Select "PDF & original by post" to receive the signed hardcopy.
Upload the Apostille along with your diploma. We will translate both documents together, which is what German authorities expect. The Apostille translation is included as part of your complete package.
Related documents you may need
University applications and residence permits often require more than just your high school diploma. If you are continuing to higher education, you may also need a university diploma translation or transcript translation for any previous studies. For residence permit applications at the "Ausländerbehörde", a birth certificate translation is typically required. And if you need to prove your identity, consider a passport translation. We translate all civil status and educational documents with the same certified quality.
